Al Regulation

27 April 2023

Each of our member regulators is considering the consequences of AI regulation in the sectors they regulate. This DRCF project aims to promote responsible AI by working together in line with the government’s AI framework and supporting prudent development of the AI auditing market. This will improve regulatory coherence and help businesses comply with AI regulation, enabling economic growth. This in turn will make citizens’ interaction with AI a positive one.

We are collaborating on our shared interests, such as the role of regulators in algorithmic assurance; what fairness and transparency in AI means for each of our remits; and the potential implications of generative AI for adopters and consumers.

  • On Fairness and Transparency in AI – we ran workshops (with other regulators such as EHRC, Ofgem, Bank of England) and published articles on how that principle is embedded in the work that each regulator delivers in the context of AI supervision
  • On Generative AI –
    • We conducted consumer research on how consumers use GenAI and appetite for future use, as well as research to better understand cross-sector adoption of this technology by organisations
    • We hosted a workshop on GenAI adoption and deployment. The event considered opportunities and risks of GenAI deployment; and examined how policymakers could support AI innovation
  • On Algorithmic assurance we continued our research into the third-party auditing market, to help inform industry on how they can make best use of third-party auditors, what this market does and should look like, to encourage responsibility for standards of fairness, privacy, etc. in AI algorithms.

The DRCF member regulators welcome engagement with other UK regulators on AI policy issues.
